Multiplexer SMA1K

SDH multiplexer SMA1K

SMA1K is a compact optical STM-1 add/drop multiplexer which is an ideal solution for best suited for utilization on your customers’ premises.

Both network operators and their customers stand to benefit from SMA1K:

  • Cost savings in investment, operation and maintenance due to compact design and easy installation;
  • Cost-efficient and versatile network access for enterprises due to a variety of interfaces which facilitate packet switched as well as voice services;
  • Economical interconnection of Ethernet — based networks via SDH, featuring highest reliability, high transmission rates and quality of service;
  • Remote monitoring of end-user interfaces even across networks operated by third-party contractors (tandem connection monitoring, in-band network element control, leased lines);
  • Comprehensive protection mechanisms including equipment protection, 1+1 multiplex section protection, SNC/P path protection;
  • Full integration into Siemens’ network management solutions.

SMA1K is a true multi-service network element that can be deployed as a terminal multiplexer or as an add/drop multiplexer in point-to-point, chain, star or ring topologies.
SMA1K is optimized to provide 2 Mbit/s, 34/45 Mbit/s, as well as 10/100BaseT services to residential and business customers.

Supporting Ethernet-based Networking

Interconnecting geographically distributed corporate networks can be quite challenging when end-users place high demands in terms of reliability and data transmission rates. SMA1K provides the fitting solution offering a wide variety of services in a very cost-efficient manner.

SMA1K combines packet switched data interfaces with widely implemented SDH platforms.
10/100 BaseT Ethernet interfaces allow you to easily interconnect your customers‘ distributed LAN locations to corporate networks without any additional expensive third-party equipment, such as switches or routers. Taking advantage of existing SDH technology, simple bridges are all you need to interconnect these LANs through point-to-point links that are transparent to higher level protocols.

With SMA1K, you can extend the proven reliability, high transmission rates and quality of your SDH technology close to the Ethernet world of your customers:

  • Combining reliable SDH quality with LAN technology;
  • Supporting LAN-LAN applications (e.g. leased lines);
  • Facilitating Ethernet interfaces for cost-effective packet-based data networking (10/100 BaseT, auto-sensing);
  • Offering optical STM-1 line cards for intra-office, short — and long-haul distances.

Meeting your Customers’ Demands for Different Applications

With SMA1K, you can fulfill your customers’ requests for a vast number of interfaces and applications:

  • Vast variety of interfaces: 2 x 10/100BaseT, 63 x 2Mbit/s, 34 Mbit/s, 45 Mbit/s;
  • Single solution for all topologies: linear, ring, star, stacked ring;
  • Versatile applications: corporate networks, transparent leased line services, interconnecting voice POPs, integrated IP/voice solutions, etc;
  • Wireless networks: interconnection of base-station controllers;
  • Fiber to the curb: high-speed network access for enterprises.

Saving Space and Cutting Costs

Reducing floor space and power consumption is increasingly important in the economical and profitable operation of networks. The compact SMA1K is specially designed to meet these goals. The entire multiplexing functionality is placed on a single card. Only one board is needed to make SMA1K work as an unprotected terminal multiplexer. By adding one card, it becomes a fully protected add/drop multiplexer. Sub modules fit onto the main cards extending the tributary capacity up to 63 x 2 Mbit/s. SMA1K allows mounting of up to 12 units in a single standard ETSI or 19” rack. This facilitates the management of local exchanges without additional expenditure, while bringing “fiber to the curb.” In street cabinets or at customers’ locations, SMA1K is your choice when it comes to optimizing your return on investment in SDH access domain.

Remote Monitoring via Third-party Environments

In many operating environments the use of third-party networks along the way is inevitable. SMA1K provides you with a variety of features for monitoring network elements, irrespective of the third-party elements used:

  • VC-4 line-to-line cross-connectivity enabling network termination functionality NT-1 for clear separation, supervision of carrier/carrier or carrier /end-user networks and domain borders;
  • Near — and far-end VC-4 tandem connection monitoring (TCM) for accurate quality of service measurement;
  • In-band remote network element control via VC-4 POH support for transmissions across different operators’ networks
  • Extensive protection (equipment protection, 1+1MSP, SNC/P).
